LSU President F. King Alexander announced the cancellation of LSU classes for Wednesday after a winter storm forced administrators to cancel all Tuesday classes.
The Baton Rouge area has seen freezing rain and sleet Tuesday morning with temperatures around the mid 20s.
WBRZ meteorologist Josh Eachus said the storm is expected to begin between 6 and 10 a.m. Tuesday with a variety of wintry precipitation and temperatures in the 20 degree range.
Eachus said the storm is expected to end by early Wednesday morning, but temperatures will remain low through the rest of the week.
The National Weather Service has extended its Winter Storm Warning until 6 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 26
At this time, athletic events have not been canceled. LSU is scheduled to take on Kentucky at 8 p.m. Tuesday in the PMAC.
The 5 Dining Hall, 459 Commons, Take 5 and Outtakes will all be open from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Tuesday. McDonald’s in the Student Union will be open from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
All other dining locations will be closed.
The LSU Tiger Trails buses and Campus Transit will not be running on Tuesday.
Mike the Tiger will be free to roam his outdoor enclosure tomorrow, but his climate-controlled night house will remain open for him to go back inside, said Ginger Guttner, director of public relations for the LSU School of Veterinary Medicine.
Guttner said that leaving his night house open is unusual because it is usually closed when he is let out during the day.
Depending on the weather, there is a possibility that Mike will not be let out at all, Guttner said.
“If there was any chance that the weather would hurt Mike, we would put him inside,” Guttner said.
Guttner said the LSU Veterinary Hospital will remain open tomorrow for its patients and for emergencies. If there is an animal emergency, owners should call the hospital before arriving at 225-578-9600.
The horses that live at the Veterinary School will be let out into the pasture, but their shelter will remain open for them, Guttner said.
