Many of us learned how to ride a bike as children. But before we could mount the bike, we had to put on our helmets.
The CDC states that the majority of deaths on bicycles occur due to head injuries. Wearing a helmet can reduce the risk of a head injury by up to 85 percent.
If this is the case, then why do so many LSU students choose to ride their bikes without helmets?
“Honestly, I just kinda find them kinda dorky,” said Lainey Farber, LSU student. “And they’re kind of bulky and hard to carry around.”
College students across the country are working on revolutionizing the bike helmet. In 2013, students at San Francisco College created the Look System bike helmet. It senses when a car or other large object comes in close proximity of the bike rider and vibrates in the object’s general direction.
“Even though it may not be something that anybody wants to wear on a regular basis…anytime you can add that type of additional protection is going to significantly reduce the types and severity of injuries,” explained Cory Lalonde, LSU Police Department Captain and Public Information Officer.
Many student bike riders agree that LSU does a pretty good job of keeping bikers safe on campus. But some have a few improvements they would like to see LSU put into place.
“I think one of the big things they should do is install bike lanes,” said Lainey Farber, LSU student. “I feel uncomfortable on the street…also, you’re not supposed to ride on the sidewalks. I feel like it’s something that needs to be installed.”
Although helmet hair may not be the cutest way to show up for class, safety never goes out of style.
