Jeff Landry, a conservative Republican who has served as Louisiana’s attorney general for the past eight years, was inaugurated as the state’s 57th governor Sunday.
He officially takes power at noon Monday. The original ceremony was rescheduled from that day due to a forecast of severe weather.
In a speech after taking the oath of office, Landry called for “education without indoctrination,” lambasted what he called a “deadly tolerance for crime” and celebrated the culture of Louisiana.
The theme of his inauguration was “welcome home.”
“For who, for over 300 hundred years, have always come back home?” Landry said, referencing the crises weathered by the state and its people.
Other state-wide officials also took the oath of office: Secretary of State Nancy Landry, Attorney General Liz Baker Murrill, Treasurer John Fleming, Commissioner of Agriculture and Forestry Michael Strain, Commissioner of Insurance TIm Temple and Lt. Gov. Billy Nungesser.
Notable attendees included House Speaker Mike Johnson, Donald Trump Jr., current Gov. John Bel Edwards and former Gov. Bobby Jindal.
Landry’s voice boomed over the Capitol steps before Landry made his entrance. He said his father had given him a book that proclaimed the values of Cajuns: God, family and country. Landry, in his projected voice, said those were values for all of Louisiana.
Landry decorated the Capitol lawn with “thin blue line” flags, symbolizing support for law enforcement. He plans to call a special legislative session focused on crime.
Landry also said the state “must safeguard our schools from the toxicity of unsuitable subject matter.” He supported a bill — signed into law by Gov. John Bel Edwards — last legislative session to restrict minors’ access to library material defined as “sexually explicit.”
Landry was sworn into office by District Court Judge Roger Hamilton, with his son J.T. Landry holding their family Bible.
The sun sank through the ceremony, which ended in the dark. Landry’s campaign colors, blue and yellow, shone from the top of the Capitol.
“If I had a hundred lives to live, I would live them all in Louisiana,” Landry said.
