LSU President F. King Alexander sent an email to students Friday, a day after the Louisiana House of Representatives heard Louisiana’s budget bill, HB1, which passed 65-37.
According to the email, the bill devotes approximately $573 million to higher education. HB1 is now pending Senate introduction.
The Daily Reveille previously reported that Jindal’s proposed budget cuts could reach up to $608 million. The state’s budget deficit is approximately $1.6 billion.
Many University students, faculty members and alumni have raised an outcry over the potential cuts to higher education, organizing a march on the Capitol and protests throughout the spring 2015 semester.
The final budget will be decided at the end of legislative session on June 11.
