Over 114.4 million people watched the New England Patriots and the Seattle Seahawks battle for the Lombardi trophy in the U.S. According to Nielsen ratings, this year’s Super Bowl had the largest audience in U.S. television program history.
The NBC’s coverage of Patriots’ nail-biting 28-24 victory over the Seahawks past Seahawks’ victory over the Broncos last year on Fox, which had 112.2 million views. The game was also streamed live for free and had 1.3 million users tuned in. Over 120 million viewers watched the last minutes of the game.
Super Bowl XLIX was the seventh straight Super Bowl to achieve over 100 million views and the fourth in five years to set a new viewing record.
Katy Perry’s halftime show, which featured Missy Elliot and Lenny Kravitz, also set a viewing record with 118.5 million people turning in. This year’s show had three million viewers more than last year’s performance from Bruno Mars and the Red Hot Chili Peppers.
Advertisers invested for a 30-second spot for the big game as much as $4.5 million, which is also a record.
After the game, 26.5 million people watched a special episode of the NBC’s “The Blacklist.” The last network to try a new show and later became a succes after the Super Bowl was CBS when it aired “Undercover Boss” in 2010.
