This episode opens with hot cop sidepiece Nate Lahey being locked up. He’s ironically being treated as he treated other criminals, with the police officer dealing with him saying you know the drill.
Meanwhile, Laurel confronts Frank about putting Sam’s ring in the woods. She tells him she knows he did it and thanks him for it. Then, Connor shows up to Oliver’s apartment to pop champagne, excited about Nate’s arrest, and the police call Rebecca to question her as she had called Nate the night he supposedly killed Sam.
Cicely Tyson shows up at Annalise’s house, and Bonnie and Frank question her. She starts schooling everybody and says she’s Annalise’s mother, and Bonnie and Frank let her in. She then goes up to Annalise’s room and throws open the curtains to wake her up. She gives her a good mom lecture and Annalise is unimpressed.
A new client named Jolene comes in and explains she is being accused of raping a patient. This case is up to Bonnie, as Annalise is basically bedridden. Bonnie slips up in the courtroom and the gang starts to feel uneasy about having her as a leader.
After a break, Bonnie gets a lecture from a fellow attorney and then does her best Annalise impression and slays in the courtroom.
Back at Annalise’s house, Mama Cicely is still giving her mom lecture, while Annalise acts angsty. Her mother calls her Anna Mae and Annalise flips out on her and tells her not to call her that. It turns out Anna Mae is her real name, but Annalise changed it to distance herself from her past.
Mama Cicely then flat out asks her if she killed Sam. Annalise says nothing and pulls the covers back over her head in bed.
Back in court, a shocking revelation of the client all but admitting to the rape in an online post surfaces and ruins the case for Bonnie and the gang. Jolene said he initiated sex and begs Bonnie not to give up on her.
Bonnie decides to help her and the whole gang disagrees. Bonnie then verbally destroys them and tells them to shut up and get to work.
Wes goes up to Annalise’s room to talk to her and her mom comes up and kicks him out. Annalise tells her he was one of her students and her mom insinuates they’re having sex.
Later, Rebecca and Wes go to the police station where Rebecca is questioned. She tells them Nate asked her to plant evidence in the house, and threatened to hurt her if she didn’t.
Bonnie runs into more problems with her case and decides to go get drunk in Annalise’s office. Frank comes in and tells her to go talk to Annalise to get help with the case. Bonnie says she can’t go up to talk to her and then asks Frank why he lied to her about Sam. He refuses to answer and she asks if it’s because Annalise told him not to. He asks her if she blames Annalise for telling him not to tell Bonnie about the murder and she says no, which is why she can’t talk to her.
Michaela starts flirting with the assistant DA on Nate’s case. She finds out what Rebecca told the police and tells the gang. Wes then remembers how weird she acted about Rudy, who lived in his apartment before him, and goes to the cops to find out what happened to him. He discovers Rudy was admitted to a mental hospital.
Back at the house, Annalise and Mama Cicely are arguing in the kitchen and Annalise decides to get right to the point. She asks her mom if she knew what her uncle did to her. Her mom says her uncle is dead and got what he deserved. Annalise breaks a glass and walks away. Her mom follows and Annalise tells her Sam knew exactly what happened to her the moment she stepped into his office. Sam had told Annalise what happened to her is the reason she is the way she is. She then tells her mom she doesn’t need her and to go home.
Bonnie finds something off about the case and discovers the attorney who had lectured her was actually dating Chad, the patient accusing Jolene of rape, and it was all a conspiracy to get money. She ends up killing the game in court and wins, getting the charges dismissed.
In the parking garage, Bonnie celebrates her win in court by getting it on with Asher. Little does she know, Frank is creepily watching in his own car.
Connor decides to have dinner with the gang and introduce them to Oliver. At dinner, Laurel and Wes go off on their own to the bar and talk. Wes tells Laurel he thinks Rebecca had something to do with Rudy being taken into a mental hospital because it was the same night Lila died. He starts questioning everything and feels awful about what they’re doing to hot cop sidepiece Nate.
Meanwhile, at Annalise’s house, Mama Cicely goes up to her daughter’s room and combs her hair while talking to her about what her uncle did to her. She tells Annalise she killed her uncle after she found out what he did to her, and Annalise hugs her.
Wes and Laurel go to the place where Rudy is being held and manage to get to see him. They start questioning him and finally get him to speak when Wes shows him a picture of Rebecca. Rudy utters the word “wet” as he looks at the picture, and Laurel and Wes make the connection to the water tank. The very water tank where Lila’s dead body was found.
