The all-girl group Little Mix from the United Kingdom is bringing Americans something to sing about.
The album “Get Weird,” released on Nov. 6, is nothing out of the ordinary for this band. It continues with the same pop sound that seems to help the band sell itself.
The first song on the album is “Black Magic,” one of its best-known songs. It rises in popularity compared to the others with over 77 million plays on Spotify.
The album comes with 16 songs that can only be compared to something Disney would put into one of its teenage love stories.
Another song on the album, “Secret Love Song,” features a Jason Derulo appearance.
“Why can’t I kiss you on the dance floor,” one of the repeating lyrics in the song, shows the depth of the song doesn’t seem to go below the surface of lust.
Continuing into the middle of the album, where artists traditionally slow the tracks down, Little Mix keeps up the beat.
An example is the track “OMG.” Instead of being upset about not getting the right guy, the song talks about how the singers just can’t keep the boys away. It’s almost a little too close to Britney Spears song “Oops!…I Did It Again.”
The song “A.D.I.D.A.S.” showcases the vocal diversity each of the girls have. As one of the singers goes into a rap, she mimics an almost Nicki Minaj voice. While the ability to sound similar to a successful artist is beneficial, the group could prosper greatly if the singers could find their own way of doing things,
Little Mix does break down into a few slower jazz/soul songs where they sound the most comfortable. This may be the direction they should be heading in.
The girl group originated in 2011, and listening to the music, it’s easy to tell they still have a long way to go. With enjoyable vocals, Little Mix has the talent to make great music, but it almost seems as though people are writing the same song to sing continuously throughout the album.
“Get Weird” showcases ups and downs of the basic teen love story, but hands it off with a bumpy delivery. It’s hard to tell if the singers are happy or sad because the song tones switch so quickly.
While the music could be great in a movie where the geeky girl turns into a princess and gets mister right, it’s not a piece of musical genius.
