After months of campaigning, debates, attack advertisements and promises to the Louisiana, Representative John Bel Edwards, the Democratic candidate, is the newly elected Governor of Louisiana.
Senator David Vitter conceded the race at 9:30 Saturday night. The final count was Edwards with 55 percent of the vote and Vitter with 45 percent. Edwards received nearly 600 thousand votes.
A least 800 supports filled Edwards’ election night party at the Hotel Monteleone where the crowd chanted Edwards’ name while booing at Senator Vitter’s image.
A local New Orleans band began playing “When the Saints come marching in” when the race was called for Edwards while supporters rang bells for the then candidate and now Governor.
Edwards took the stage with his family and thanked everyone saying, “For those who voted for me, I am eternally grateful and humble and I won’t let you down.”
Edwards said that Vitter he would work with Vitter.
“I will work with Senator Vitter because every decision he has will be one of mine. It’s my hope and expectation that he and I will work together to serve Louisiana.”
Mayor Mitch Landrieu, former U.S. Senator Mary Landrieu and former Governor Edwin Edwards attended the event.
