Junior tennis player Jordan Daigle won the Cajun Classic single bracket in Lafayette on Sunday, losing just one set in the entire tournament.
Being back in his hometown, Daigle was off to a strong start in his first match, beating University of Mississippi’s Grey Hamilton in two sets.
He continued his streak in the second round, beating USC senior, and the 61st-ranked player in the nation, Max De Vroome in two sets, 7-5 and 6-4.
“Jordan and Justin did a very good job at taking advantage of opportunities and both winning in straight sets against very good opponents,” said LSU coach Jeff Brown in a news release. “They took advantage of opportunities and maintained a very high level of play.”
Daigle, the third-ranked player participating, met University of Georgia’s Paul Oosterbaan in the single semifinals and advanced to the championship round after beating the unranked Bulldog in two sets, 6-4 and 6-2.
His streak of winning in two sets ended there. After winning the first set 6-3, the No. 42 ranked Trojan, Nick Crystal, dominated the second, allowing Daigle to score just one point. However, the third set and the single bracket was Daigle’s; he found his rhythm and won, 6-2.
“It started off really well,” Daigle said in a news release. “I lost a little bit of focus in the second set but once the third set started I kind of regrouped mentally and played really well to close out the match.”
The tournament marked the start of the season for sophomore Simon Freund and junior Justin Butsch.
Freund won the first round against Florin Bragusi from the University of Oklahoma but was beat in two sets by Ole Miss’ Stefan Lindmark in the second.
It could have been an all-LSU final, but No. 91 Butsch fell short against USC’s Crystal in the round of four.
“Justin gave himself a chance even though he did not play his best, so that is all you can ask for on that kind of day,” Brown said in a news release.
