In most scenarios, I would say the majority of us that go to LSU aren’t fans of Alabama. But in this scenario, I would have to say that Bama is racking up quite a few brownie points.
This past Sunday, a federal judge put a two-week hold on Alabama’s gay marriage ruling, but at least they are taking a step forward to provide everyone with equal marriage rights.
It was exciting to first hear of Alabama approving gay marriage in the near future.
But seriously?! Alabama is legalizing gay marriage before Louisiana? Blasphemy.
Speaking on behalf of the gay community as an ally, this isn’t fair to leave them in limbo like this. They have a right to get a permanent answer, rather than the issue being “looked over.” And Alabama should seriously hop on that ASAP.
Recently, gay marriage rights have been a hot topic in the media, considering it has been legalized in many states like Florida and many others
I know that I am constantly stressing how LGBT couples should have the same rights as straight couples. But if society stigmatized straight individuals the way they do with LGBT individuals, everyone would cause a riot.
The gay community may be a minority, but it is a minority that is slowly growing. And as we continue to hear about different states that have become much more open to the issue, more individuals become comfortable “coming out” to their community in hopes of a sense of acceptance and support.
We have pushed for equal rights for people of color and people with disabilities in the past so this issue is no different.
But there is an even bigger issue at hand—we have people like Court Chief Justice Roy Moore blasting their heinous, radical conservatism all over the media.
And according to the Human Rights Campaign, this isn’t the first time that Moore has blatantly spoken out against the LGBT community. Last year, he reached out to all state governors asking for their support in his campaign to define marriage as a legal binding between a man and a woman.
This man makes me sick to my stomach. The disgust that I have towards him is almost as bad, if not worse, than my disgust towards Rick Scott.
And let me just say that that is a very heavy hitting statement coming from a liberal like myself. He is definitely not earning any brownie points or gold stars, that’s for sure.
So what can we do? Well I can start by saying how important it is to educate your friends and family, but even more so, it is essential that you are there to support any LGBT friends through all of this chaos.
So is love really free after all? Will there be a time when there will be equal rights for everyone? I sure do hope so and it is only a matter of time before it is written in writing.
So stand up and be a voice to promote advocacy and don’t just rely on everyone else to do it. The time is now.
Same-sex marriage rights can be furthered by allies to the LGBT community
