If it’s possible to write the same song 11 times with different lyrics, Desperate Journalist would know.
The band’s self-titled album debuted in the United Kingdom in November 2014, but made its way to the states this week. Sadly, it may not have been worth the wait. Once listeners have heard one song on the album, they might as well quit listening.
The British band possesses some musical talent, but it’s lacking variety.
Desperate Journalist formed in 2013, its name developing in reference to a parody song by The Cure. The band previously released an EP and several singles, but this is its first full-length album.
The album opens with one of the band’s more popular songs, “Control.” It’s a decent mix of
lead singer Jo Bevan’s airy voice and a catchy tune listeners might find themselves moving along to.
Another popular song on the album is “Cristina.” The song was featured on its first EP, and probably such a success because of its similar sound to “Control.”
Throughout the 11 songs, Desperate Journalist explores both upbeat and slower melodies, but they all sound very similar. If listeners are looking for a positive, the album’s alternative sound is solid. The band’s other members, bassist Simon Drowner, guitarist Rob Hardy and drummer Caz Hellbent also know what they’re doing, musically.
The band has produced a vibe similar to The Cure and has even been compared to The Smiths in several reviews, which are both compliments. The talent this band has is impressive, but it’s just playing it safe.
Occasionally a song will break into an unprecedented or exciting interlude, but it makes a quick return to familiar territory.
It sounds like the kind of album that would be playing in a seedy, underground club environment. Then again, maybe that’s the point of the post punk group’s music.
In the music industry, it’s understood that bands like to stick to a formula which works for them, but maybe from album to album, not song to song.
Desperate Journalist’s album is worth checking out, but prepare for the repetition. Who knows, maybe it’s just saving all its tricks for the future.
