English musician, singer-songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist Damon Albarn has come a long way from his status as a 90s Brit Pop icon as the frontman of Blur. Albarn still retains his status as an icon, but has delved into an amalgamation of genres. Co-founder of the virtual band the Gorillaz in 2000, Albarn collaborated with artists such as Del the Funky Homosapien, De La Soul, MF Doom, Bobby Womack, Little Dragon, Lou Reed, Snoop Dogg, and many more and spanned the genres of hip hop, electronic, dub, reggae, and pop. Albarn has also engaged in numerous other projects. Heavily influenced by African music, Damon Albarn released Mali Music in 2002 and has also recorded with Nigerian drummer and composer Tony Allen. In 2007, Albarn along with Tony Allen, Simon Tong (The Verve), and Paul Simonon (The Clash) released The Good, The Bad, and The Queen, a concept album about modern life in London. Also dabbling in opera, Albarn composed and wrote the songs for Rufus Norris’ opera Dr. Dee in 2011. In 2012, Albarn, Red Hot Chili Peppers bassist Flea, and Tony Allen released the afro-funk album Rocket Juice and the Moon. Most recently, Damon Albarn released his debut solo studio album Everyday Robots in spring 2014 and has written the music for wonder.land, an Alice in Wonderland inspired musical to be shown this summer at the Manchester International Festival.
