That’s drawsome.
This puntastic phrase comes from the popular mobile game Draw Something, which has topped the App Store and Android Marketplace for close to a month.
Similar to other mobile games like Scramble With Friends, Draw Something is like Pictionary for smartphones. Users select something to draw and try to get the other player to guess their drawing. If the drawing is correctly guessed, players earn in-game currency that can be used to buy more colors to use when drawing.
Players can invite Facebook friends to play with them.
Sports administration junior Claire Langlois said she communicates with people she rarely talks to through the game.
“We interact through the game because one of us found the other,” Langlois said.
John Zimmer, biology freshman, said his favorite aspect of the game is the drawing.
“I’ve always liked games like Pictionary and Cranium that involve drawing and guessing pictures,” he said. “It’s fun to see if you can guess your friend’s drawing or if they can guess yours.”
The game is extremely popular. It hit 1.5 million downloads 10 days after its launch. Five weeks later, the game has 20 million downloads, developer OMGPOP CEO Dan Porter told Business Insider. Each second, 3,000 drawings are being created. Mobile games developer Zynga felt Draw Something was so good, they purchased OMGPOP for $200 million.
But Langlois said she sees the game’s allure wearing off.
“It’s just one of those games,” Langlois said. “Like Angry Birds or Words with Friends, it’s going to get insanely popular and then something else is going to come along. and we’re all going to forget about it. But right now, it’s the new, fun game to play with your friends.”
Zimmer agreed, saying he could already see it fading.
“A few of my friends have already gotten tired of it and stopped playing,” he said.
Not only is the game popular, it’s profitable. Draw Something pulls in six-figure sums every day, and has eclipsed the total revenue of all OMGPOP’s games from last year, according to Porter.
Langlois was surprised such a simple game could make that amount of money.
The app is available on the App Store and Android Marketplace for 99 cents. A free ad-supported version is also available.
