The Tiger Transition team began mentoring first year and transfer students in 2009. Since then, the program has grown from a pilot of about 50 mentored students to a fully funded program of about 400.
Assistant Director of First Year Experience Randy Fontenot has headed the Tiger Transition team since its inception.
He said the program’s purpose is for mentors to advise first-year students and offer support for the transition into college.
Along with Fontenot, an executive board made up of students runs the program
Fontenot attributes the program’s growth to first-year students’ need for guidance and the executive board’s student insight.
He said after 2010, the program improved the criteria matching mentors to students, after an assessment revealed some students didn’t connect with their mentors.
Students are matched with mentors based on major, interests, hometown and other qualities.
