I recently saw the movie trailer for “Life of Pi” and found out it was a book written by Yann Martel. The trailer looks awesome, but I didn’t get what the movie was about, so I decided to read the book.
I almost stopped reading a fourth of the way through because I couldn’t get into it. The plot was awful. How Martel could write a book about a boy on a boat for almost 300 days with a tiger, who doesn’t eat him, and get awards and a movie deal is beyond me. I get that the book was supposed to have theology and philosophy in it, but the concept could have been packaged better. Don’t get me wrong, I love books with meanings the reader has to look deep into the words to find, but this book was ridiculous. Pi, the main character, was raised Hindu but discovers Christianity and Islam when he is 14 years old. He then starts to practice all three simultaneously, which is somewhat controversial. He finds benefits in each religion. His understanding and relationship with God is what drives the novel.
I want to give you an over view of the plot, but I basically gave it to you already. His family dies when their ship is wrecked, and everyone dies except for him and four animals — a tiger, a zebra, an orangutan and a hyena. Three of the animals die, leaving Pi and the tiger alone together. Eventually they land on Mexican soil, and Pi is questioned about how the ship sank. No one believes his story about the animals, but when he switches the animals with humans the questioners don’t know which story is true or false.
I’m desperately hoping the movie can involve me in a way that the book didn’t. Maybe I didn’t look enough into the book for meanings, but I looked pretty hard. A plus for the movie so far is the graphics that I’ve seen in the trailer look amazing. I hope Ayush Tandon, the actor playing Young Pi, is an incredible actor because if he’s acting by himself with animals it could get lame. So here’s hoping Tandon can bring another level of game to the movie adaption. I surprisingly want to see the movie even though I didn’t enjoy the book. There have been very few incidents where I have enjoyed a movie over a book.
If you want to check out the awesome trailer for a not-so-awesome book click here. Hopefully you’ll get as excited for this movie as I am, even though I’m not quite sure why. Indian actors now have a soft spot in my heart after “Slumdog Millionaire,” and I have a feeling this movie is going to be just as good.
