The LSU soccer team lost an overtime battle 3-2 to No. 23 Tennessee on Sunday afternoon in Knoxville, Tenn., after a scoreless first half of competition.
The Tigers (6-7-4) and No. 23 Tennessee (11-4-2) went goal for goal during the last 35 minutes of the game until the Lady Vols’ golden goal during the first overtime period.
The first goal of the game came in the 63rd minute from LSU freshman forward/midfielder Fernanda Piña, who shot from about six yards out after a corner kick by freshman forward/midfielder Jade Kovacevic.
Shortly after, Tennessee tied the match in the 68th minute with a long-distance goal from senior midfielder Kylie Bono. The Lady Vols took a 2-1 lead with less than 10 minutes to play in regulation after senior midfielder Amy Harrison snuck a header in for a goal after a cross into the box by junior midfielder/defender Tori Bailey.
LSU sophomore midfielder Alex Arlitt tied the match shortly before the overtime period with a goal after stealing the ball from a Lady Vol defender.
Five minutes into the first overtime period, Tennessee sophomore forward Hannah Wilkinson scored the game-winner on a breakaway down the left side of the field.
Piña and Kovacevic led the team with Piña’s three goals and Kovacevic’s four assists.
