Update 1:46 p.m.: So far, the college has raised $8 million for the project, Jindal said.
Architectural design for the building will start in December. Construction is slated to start in fall of 2014, and the building should be finished in fall of 2016.
The building is the largest on campus and is “in need of repair,” Jindal said and called the project a “win-win”for students and the economy.
He added that engineering and computer sciences degrees are a growing field across America, and the college will have to increase graduates by 150-200 per year to meet Louisiana’s demands.
“Engineering and computer science jobs are the highest paying,” Jindal said.
Interim System President and Chancellor William “Bill” Jenkins said the announcement was a “truly transformational event in LSU’s history.”
“We have to focus on our strengths as we invest in the engineering college,” he said.
The College of Engineering graduates about 560 students a year, Jindal said.
The state will enter into a $100 million dollar partnership to expand Patrick F. Taylor Hall, said Gov. Bobby Jindal announced today at a news conference in Patrick F. Taylor Hall.
The expansion will increase the building’s size to 380,000 square feet and is expected to be completed in 2016.
