A trip to the Spanish Moon rarely ends in disappointment, and last night was no different. Both bands were fantastic, although admittedly I think I enjoyed Lymbyc Systym’s set a bit more. Despite the fact that I had never heard the band before the show, they quickly won me over with their energy and craft. Though their set up was relatively simple (two brothers: one on drums and one on keys), they played some consistently dynamic songs that ranged from ambient to groovy and even slightly on the post-rock side of things with their ever-satisfying instrumental climaxes.
Next up was the band that I had originally come to see: electronic artist and ex-member of The Books, Zammuto. Surprisingly, the frantic and experimental sounds of Zammuto’s recordings were recreated extremely well with a four piece band, complete with a positively stellar drummer who played a fantastic solo near the end of the set. And although most of their tunes came from Zammuto’s debut album that was released last April, they did play a few songs from The Books and surprisingly, a Paul Simon cover. The band also had a projector set up that played video clips, from pictures of zebra’s butts on the track “Zebra Butt” to what seemed to be a late 80s/early 90s infomercial for a strange massaging tool known as “The Stick.” But as mentioned, Lymbyc Systym stole the show for me in terms of performance.
Although attendees seemed to be enjoying the how, the Moon was tragically under populated that night. I would have liked to see a much bigger crowd, given how well each of the bands played. Maybe next time?
