Theta Chi became the University’s 21st fraternity when it was voted into the Interfraternity Council on Sept. 26. In June, the Panhellenic Council voted to invite the sorority Alpha Phi on campus, and the organization accepted the invitation days later.
Logan Davis, a graduate assistant at Greek Life, told The Daily Reveille in October that Theta Chi became the newest addition into the Interfraternity Council after it received the necessary number of votes.
Theta Chi began as an interest group on campus in April 2010 with 10 undergraduate men but grew and became the Iota Pi chapter April 21 this year with 45 members.
Theta Chi is one of the nation’s oldest college fraternities. It was founded at Norwich University in Vermont on April 10, 1856 on the principles of friendship and mutual assistance.
Theta Chi has more than 131 active chapters across the nation, Davis said.
Alpha Phi will have representatives on campus throughout the year. Director of Extension Kara Wilhite told The Daily Reveille in October that the Greek community anticipates Alpha Phi to participate in formal recruitment by 2014.
Wilhite said the University’s Panhellenic Council Executive Board created an Alpha Phi Extension Team with two members from each Panhellenic sorority.
“Our 11 sororities have been truly engaged in the process and were eager to not only learn more about Alpha Phi but also enthusiastic about what this will do for our Panhellenic and Greek community,” said Panhellenic President Sara Winkler in a June news release.
Alpha Phi plans to recruit an average chapter size of 263 members.
Alpha Phi is present on nearly 160 campuses and has more than 200,000 members, according to its website.
