Students concerned about torture and human rights abuses can attend Friday’s Human Rights Symposium featuring Dinah PoKempner.
The Symposium, held at the Paul M. Hebert Law Center in room 106, will last from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. The International Law Society is hosting the event.
PoKempner, Human Rights Watch General Counsel member, will deliver a lecture on torture. Following PoKempner’s speech, University professors Dr. Rodwan Abouharb, assistant professor of political science and Dr. Alberto Zuppi, associate professor of law, will take part in a panel discussion following the speech. Human Rights Watch is the nation’s largest human rights organization. PoKempner has lectured on human rights issues such as laws of war. She has also covered the torture cases from Guantanamo Bay and Abu Ghraib. Abouharb will discuss the impact international institutions have on human rights, and Zuppi will address his experiences with counseling victims of human rights abuses. The event is open to everyone.
