A University campus transit vehicle struck a cyclist riding in a crosswalk at the intersection of Infirmary Road and Dalrymple Drive about 9 p.m. Wednesday, LSU Police Department officials confirmed. The cyclist, a male University student, was brought in an ambulance to a hospital, although his injuries did not appear to be serious, according to Maj. Helen Haire, LSUPD spokeswoman. The vehicle, a 15-person van, was already in the crosswalk when the cyclist was unable to stop. The cyclist was thrown from the bike while braking, landed on the street and was struck when partially thrown under the van’s rear portion, Haire said. Haire said because the cyclist was in a crosswalk, he did not have the right-of-way. She said no tickets were issued and no fault has been identified. Timothy Gonzales, computer science sophomore, was riding the campus transit van when the cyclist hit the vehicle. “Once we heard him screaming she, the driver stopped right there,” Gonzales said. “And she called for help. She did everything she possibly could.” Gonzales said as the transit van was turning right on Infirmary Road off Dalrymple Drive, the cyclist tried to stop. He was unable to stop and slid into the crosswalk where he collided with the vehicle.
