An East Campus apartment was burglarized around 11:15 a.m. Wednesday, LSU Police Department officials confirmed. Maj. Lawrence Rabalais, LSUPD spokesman, said no arrests have been made, no weapons were involved and the incident is classified as a simple burglary of an inhabited dwelling. No injuries occurred, and a laptop was reported stolen. Meagan McClure, English junior, called the police to report the robber’s presence. McClure said she was in her bedroom when her roommate, international relations and agriculture junior Carey Galliani, left for work around 11 a.m. Galliani said she told McClure she was leaving for work and then left the apartment. Galliani said she shut, but did not lock, the door because McClure was leaving for class in a matter of minutes. McClure said she then heard someone in the apartment, and when she opened Galliani’s room to see who it was, a college-aged man was standing in the corner, shoving a laptop up his shirt. McClure questioned the man, who then ran toward her, shoving her out of the way and against the wall.McClure ran after the robber as he fled the apartment. The robber slammed the door shut before she could exit and held it closed from the outside.
“If I couldn’t catch up to him and grab him…I at least wanted to get a good look at him,” McClure said.
McClure then called 911, reported the incident to dispatchers and was transferred to LSUPD. She said she gave a quick, partial description and within a minute, an LSUPD officer was on the scene.
Galliani returned to the scene later, and the pair’s other two roommates were not present during the incident.
Galliani said the laptop is the only item she noticed was stolen.
McClure said she questions ECA’s safety, but plans to continue living there.
“If we’re not safe enough in our own apartment, I don’t know exactly what is safe,” McClure said.
Rabalais said officers searched the area surrounding ECA, but no suspects were identified.
