One year after a 13-18 record and a midseason coaching change, LSU senior guard Garrett Temple said “anything can happen” for this men’s basketball season.”We didn’t have a good season last year — now it’s over,” Temple said. “First game of the season, we have a clean slate.”LSU will start that clean slate Saturday at 1 p.m. against Jackson State in the PMAC.The 2007-2008 season was one of the most turbulent in the program’s history. LSU got off to a slow start to the season, beginning 8-13 before John Brady was fired in February, ending his 11-year tenure with the team.LSU men’s basketball coach Trent Johnson, who was hired in April, said his team isn’t where it needs to be right now after two preseason scrimmages. But he knows what to expect when the Tigers open the season.”We want to be perfect right now,” Johnson said. “We’re not perfect . . . but that doesn’t matter. In [one day] we need to be ready to play.”Temple said players are starting to correct themselves after they make mistakes.”They know they do something wrong, so they don’t even have to listen to coach,” Temple said.Junior forward Tasmin Mitchell said this season’s opener doesn’t feel different than previous ones, despite the coaching change.”We’ve just got a different way we get ready for the game because we’ve got a different coaching staff,” Mitchell said.Mitchell, who missed most of last season with a left leg injury, said he felt rusty in LSU’s first scrimmage but is ready to play Saturday.”I’m back,” Mitchell said. “Everything is falling into place.”Mitchell’s isn’t the only injury LSU has endured in the early season.Freshman forward Storm Warren left practice Tuesday with an apparent foot injury, but team spokesman Kent Lowe said Thursday the injury isn’t serious.”He practiced [Wednesday] full speed,” Lowe said. “The doctors found nothing wrong.”Johnson said junior guard Alex Farrer has been able to practice this week without a knee brace, but sophomore forward Garrett Green has been limited in practice because of a lower back injury.”He came out, went a day and a half, and felt more pain,” Johnson said. “It’s not very good.”Johnson said he is likely to start Temple, Mitchell, senior Chris Johnson, senior Marcus Thornton and sophomore Bo Spencer this Saturday.Temple, LSU’s point guard last season, will play the third guard this season, as opposed to having a more conventional small forward.Johnson said Temple had no trouble switching positions.”He understands the game,” Johnson said. “He has a high basketball IQ. It’s a load off of everybody else in terms of his basketball IQ, his knowledge.”Johnson said Spencer separated himself from freshman Chris Bass in the race for the starting point guard position.”[Bo] still has a long [way] to go,” Johnson said. “A lot of that has to do with the experience factor.”Johnson said he is surprised of his team’s understanding of the offense so far this season.”It’s very structured as opposed to what they’re used to playing,” Johnson said. “They see it works, they see they can get shots if they play together, if they share the ball, and they execute.”—-Contact Robert Stewart at [email protected]
