The Student Government Senate approved a bill allocating $70,363 from SG funds to aid in a campus beautification project at the last Senate meeting of the semester Wednesday night. The Senate also approved resolutions recommending the Student Require Fee Advisory Committee increase student fees for both the Student Health Center and University Recreation. The initial funds spent by SG will lay the groundwork for the Class Gift Campaign, which will allow graduating classes to leave their mark on campus, according to Sen. Tyler Martin, College of Business and co-author of the bill.”We’re paying for the landscaping for this initial project,” Martin said. “But the class of 2009 will have the option to donate to the project in return for a paver with their name on it. These funds gathered will go into an account that the next graduating class will be able to use for their class gift.”The project will transform the area behind Dodson Auditorium into a usable courtyard, and the project is expected to be complete by April.Martin said a Web site is being developed for students to make their donations, and the Office of Student Life is working to include an option on students’ fee bills. The balance of the SG Initiatives Account will now be $10,000, and the SG Surplus Account will be $15,000.The Senate also approved a resolution urging the SRFAC to recommend a student fee increase of $17 a year to support the Health Center and a $25 student fee increase a year to support University Recreation. The SRFAC cut the fee increases by $8 before sending the bills to the Senate.LSU System President John Lombardi will consider SG’s recommendation in the final decision.—- Contact Katie Kennedy at [email protected]
