Louisiana State University is known for its beautiful campus, rich traditions, and vibrant student life. However, there is a noticeable contrast between the well-maintained university grounds and the surrounding areas of Baton Rouge.
The university prioritizes safety and cleanliness, with regular maintenance, visible security presence, and a strong sense of community. The campus feels like its own small city, with a distinct atmosphere of academic focus and school spirit.
“LSU itself is a very appealing campus. So it’s like you come here and see everything and you love it. But once you step off campus it goes down. Mostly on the west side of campus.” Paul Vaughn said.
Once students step off campus, the environment can feel drastically different. Certain areas of Baton Rouge, especially those near the university, have struggled with crime and economic challenges.
Some neighborhoods have higher crime rates, and students are often advised to be cautious when traveling off campus, especially at night.
“The community is not the same on both sides of campus so it’s like you can tell the difference once you’re off,” Vaughn said.
LSU’s campus stands out because of the university’s dedicated efforts to maintain a secure and visually appealing environment. However, students who take proper safety precautions and stay informed about their surroundings can still enjoy what Baton Rouge has to offer.
