Go back in time to Christmas Day 2004.In most Louisiana houses, this is probably what happened that day: You and your family ate a huge lunch together, unwrapped countless gifts then gathered around the television to watch a news conference where former LSU coach Nick Saban announced he was leaving the Tigers to coach the NFL’s Miami Dolphins. At the time, most Tiger fans were OK with the decision. Saban had resurrected LSU’s program and brought Baton Rouge its first football national championship in nearly half a century. But a little conversation between Saban and former Tiger Athletic Foundation President Richard Gill helps put things in perspective.”At one point, [Saban] told me, ‘I know they won’t believe this, but this is my school. It always will be my school, and LSU will always be the University that’s first in my heart,'” Gill told The Times-Picayune on Dec. 26, 2006.Wow. Funny how a few years change some things. We respect Saban’s coaching abilities, but his propensity to lie and use people are just too much. “I guess I have to say it. I’m not going to be the coach at Alabama,” Saban said at a news conference while he was still Miami’s coach. Less than two weeks later, Saban bolted to ‘Bama.Wow. Again. So from Baton Rouge to Miami, Saban made his way back to the college coaching ranks and landed in Tuscaloosa, Ala. — back in the Southeastern Conference and back in the SEC Western Division, home of the LSU Tigers. Now that’s classy. There are those who say people are making too much of this “Saban homecoming.” And maybe they have a case. But we think people have every right to dislike Saban. What he did for LSU was great. It sparked the program to where it is today — arguably the best in the country. But actions speak louder than words. And if LSU really was “the University that’s first” in Saban’s heart, then he wouldn’t be wearing crimson and white.Maybe one day Saban will realize how much he’s truly a traitor, jerk — and the epitome of the phrase ‘tiger bait.’—-Contact the Editorial Board at [email protected]
