Editor’s note: This article may contain language that could be offensive to some people. With resentment for the opposition reaching a boiling point during Saturday’s game against Alabama, enough members of the student section resisted the urge to scream “You suck” for the “Oh-Wee-Oh” chant to live to see another day. Rob Dowie, Tiger Band drum major, said the “Oh-Wee-Oh” chant will continue for the rest of the season, although he admitted bringing back the chant for the ‘Bama game was a risk.”It was probably the hardest situation because it was so intense,” Dowie said. “It was the game with the most reasons for students to make the cheer negative, but the students passed that test. That’s really promising for the rest of the season.”Student Government President Colorado Robertson led a campaign in the weeks leading up to the game to add “Tigers” to the end of the chant, which was banned last season after students inserted a shortened version of South Carolina’s mascot — the Gamecocks — to the end of “You suck.”Dowie estimated more than 75 percent of the student section chanted “Tigers.””There’s a small group of people who want to scream ‘You suck,’ but the majority want to keep it clean,” Dowie said. Robertson said the negotiations to bring back the banned chant began several months ago. “The band had some legitimate concerns about having an un-sportsmanlike chant,” Robertson said. “They didn’t want to bring it back because they were afraid students would say ‘You suck’ and not portray very well on the band.”Robertson said he understood the importance of the chant to the student body, so he was able to reach the test-run compromise with band staff. Dowie said the atmosphere in the stadium after the first successful run-through of the chant was “awesome.””The band broke out into applause because they were so happy it worked,” Dowie said. “We got to play it three times during the game, and every time it was just applause afterward that it was working.”Dowie said the chant is critical to keeping the students and the team pumped up. “It connects the period between scoring and kickoff,” Dowie said. “It fills that time and keeps the momentum going.”Paige Perry, political science freshman, said she chanted ‘Tigers’ along with the students surrounding her in the lower-left corner of the student section. “I couldn’t even hear ‘You suck’ from where I was sitting,” Perry said. “That was pretty surprising.”Patricia Sterpu, mass communication senior, said it was a different story from her seat near the cheerleaders. “I could definitely hear a lot of students screaming ‘You suck’ and ‘Fuck you, Saban,'” Sterpu said. “I also heard ‘Tigers’ though, so my group combined it and said ‘You Sigers.'”—-Contact Katie Kennedy at [email protected]
