At 6:30 p.m. in the Atchafalaya Room tonight, the Student Government Senate will vote on SGB17. Authored by Business Sen. Tyler Martin and UCFY Sen. Chris Sellers, SGB17 allocates nearly $70,000 on the Class Gift Campaign. The Class Gift Campaign is a program that would allow graduating seniors the opportunity to put their names on their very own piece of the University — literally. Two years ago, the University greenlighted renovations on the West Dodson Courtyard — and for any students who have happened to walk by West Dodson, it’s obvious renovations are needed. But instead of getting the usual University beautification treatment, SG has proposed allowing graduating seniors to purchase commemorative bricks featuring their names in the courtyard scheduled for renovation. The money — one half of the total cost would be allocated from the SG Surplus Account, while the other half would be allocated from the SG Initiatives Account — will pay for West Dodson Courtyard’s drainage and irrigation improvements, concrete banding, sidewalk paving, bed preparation, landscaping and assorted other improvements. We urge the Senate to pass SGB17.When we initially heard that SG wanted to spend $70,000 of student money, we cringed and feared the worst. But we were wrong. If SG has to spend $70,000 — and given the rules that attend student fees earmarked for SG expenses, SG often does have to spend that money or risk losing it — we’re glad the money will be spent on something like the Class Gift Campaign. Unlike money spent on SG public relations, advertising and “days of awareness,” the Class Gift Campaign is something tangible, generous and relevant to students. We like that SG is trying to do things on campus that can be seen — and should this program succeed, its success would be visible to students in perpetuity. Sometimes success needs to be something students can see and touch. We know $70,000 is a lot of money. If its extended, the follow-through has to be solid. But an expense like this is an expense that, if done right, every student will know — and every student can evaluate its success or failure.Big projects require big money — but offer big rewards.—-Contact the Editorial Board at [email protected] hope the Senate agrees with us.
