NEW ORLEANS (AP) _ Louisiana will receive $40 million in federal disaster assistance for fisheries hit by recent hurricanes.
The money can be used to restore oyster reefs, clear water debris, and repair infrastructure such as docks and icehouses. The funding is coming from a $75 million congressional resolution signed into law in September.
Louisiana is the largest seafood producer in the lower 48 states.
Under the resolution, Texas also will be eligible for up to $7 million to help repair its damaged fishing industry.
The state will have to draw a plan on how the money will be used.
