BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – LSU volleyball senior libero Elena Martinez was named the Southeastern Conference Defensive Player of the Week for her role in leading the Tigers to a pair of weekend sweeps, the league office announced Monday. Martinez had a stellar weekend at libero, amassing 36 digs in just six sets, an average of 6.00 per frame. The senior recorded a pair of 18-dig performances against division rivals Ole Miss and Arkansas and spearheaded the defensive effort that held the Rebels to a negative hitting clip at -.046. In addition to her 18 digs against Arkansas, Martinez fell just one assist shy of a double-double as she dished out a career-best nine assists against the Razorbacks With her 36 digs this weekend, the New Orleans native moved into seventh place all-time in career digs by an LSU Tiger. She needs just 72 more to bump up a spot to sixth. Martinez also recorded her 45th and 46th consecutive double-figure dig matches and needs just four more to pass up Kassi Mikulik for that record in the libero era. She also is fourth among active players. This is the second SEC Defensive Player of the Week honor of the season for Martinez, who also was recognized after week one, and the fourth of her career. She also is the reigning SEC Defensive Player of the Year.
