OK, student section — this weekend is your time to shine. The first home game of the season started at 10 a.m. The student section was half full, and even those students ended up leaving Death Valley before the fourth quarter even began. The second home game, two weeks after Hurricane Gustav, was against a non-conference opponent whose prime motivation for playing was probably the big, fat check LSU dished out.The third game in Tiger Stadium was against one of the perinnial bottom feeders of the SEC West, Mississippi State. But this weekend? A big-time opponent in town, conference and national title implications at stake and a nationwide audience looking on.What more could football fans ask for?One of the greatest things about college football is the atmosphere big-time games provide. From tailgating to traditional cheers to fight songs, few experiences rival attending a college football game. And sometimes that fact gets lost for students at major universities like LSU and Georgia. With so many hyped games in a season, students sometimes forget that not everyone has the opportunity to attend games like this Saturday’s.But every season, one or two games trump all others on the schedule. And this contest is one of those.Fan support will be almost as important as play calling and officiating Saturday.LSU and Georgia are two evenly matched teams. Both started the season with high expectations, and both have suffered early setbacks to conference opponents.Saturday’s game could make or break the season for either squad. But 92,000 strong behind LSU could help sway the result in the Tigers’ favor. There’s no reason the student section shouldn’t be out in full force Saturday. The Voodoo Music Festival shouldn’t keep true LSU fans away.Besides, there are two weeks before ‘Bama comes to town. Think of Saturday as a test run before Nick Saban returns.—-Contact the Editorial Board at [email protected]
