An extra 2,150 students may be lining up at the polls Nov. 4 as the Reilly Center for Media and Public Affairs exceeded its registration goals Friday.Partnering with the Geaux Vote initiative, the Center led an effort to register 2,000 University students. Today is the last day to register to vote for the general, congressional and presidential elections Nov. 4.”The voter registration went terrifically,” said Adrienne Moore, director of the Reilly Center. The Reilly Center mailed registration forms to numerous parishes in Louisiana, Texas and even Colorado on Thursday afternoon.”It was impressive,” Moore said. “We had quite a few out-of-staters.”Today, Madeline Peters and Chelsea Gomez, University mass communication students who founded Project Geaux – an organization aimed at getting students more civically engaged through Geaux Vote and other community projects – are hand-delivering forms for students living in East Baton Rouge Parish.Moore said if students living in East Baton Rouge Parish still want to register, they should complete the registration form in person at the Registrar of Voters on the second floor of the Governmental Building downtown. The office is open from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.Documents needed for registration include current photo identification and proof of current address, like a utility bill.Moore said she thinks many students will register today, bringing the total number of newly registered University students to about 3,000.”This will be my first time voting,” said Jerome Newsome, electrical engineering sophomore who recently registered to vote. “Our age group has a voice in every election.”—-Contact Kyle Bove at [email protected]
