Some people should be ashamed of themselves. The behavior of some of the “fans” in Tiger Stadium on Saturday was deplorable at best, and it made all of the purple-and-gold faithful look bad.I’m all for fans enjoying the game and criticizing the team when it performs well or poorly. But it’s absurd for fans to be negative before the contest even starts. When the public address announcer listed the starting lineups on the Jumbotron before last Saturday’s game, there was a spattering of clearly audible boos when freshman quarterback Jarrett Lee’s name was called. That’s totally out of line.I was under the impression that a player should at least be given the opportunity to screw up before fans threw in the towel on him.I’m not going to sit here and say there aren’t obvious signs Lee is a freshman, but he’s done as well as one could reasonably expect him to.Lee is No. 3 in the Southeastern Conference in passing efficiency, behind only Florida’s Tim Tebow and Georgia’s Matthew Stafford. And I don’t know if anyone is aware, but one of those guys has a Heisman Trophy and the other has racked up nearly 2,000 yards this season.I’m not saying fans should give Lee a free pass for his mistakes. I was just as upset as anyone with his performance Saturday, but at least let him get on the field and fail before throwing him under the bus. Another thing that disgusted me about LSU fans was the mass exodus in the third quarter.Although the scoreboard didn’t show it, LSU was still very much in the game until late into the fourth quarter. That’s a fact that went ignored by the large percentage of fans whom I suppose had other, more pressing issues at hand than sitting through the duration of a football game. The only reasons someone should leave in the third quarter of an SEC football game is if they or their significant other just went into labor, someone died or they are bleeding profusely from a massive head wound. All other excuses are flimsy at best.Football is only played in Tiger Stadium eight days a year, so if we assume each game lasts four hours, it’s only a 32-hour commitment for an entire season. If you don’t think you can hang on until at least the fourth quarter, sell your tickets to someone who will. There are hundreds — if not thousands — of people who will be willing to take your ticket for greater than face value, and you can sit on your couch at home and change the channel at your leisure. It looks bad on TV when people tune into LSU football games, and instead of seeing fans, they see silver bleachers and gold seat backs.Fans wonder when Death Valley lost its reputation for being the toughest place to play in America. It was probably a few minutes after halftime when your fellow fans left to beat the traffic.Does anyone care how this will affect Tiger football for seasons to come?If I were a top-level high school football player who had a dozen schools after me, I wouldn’t even consider playing for a program where the fans didn’t appreciate the players enough to stick around until the game was definitely out of reach.I don’t want to be painted as some self-righteous superfan or anything. I’m just an everyday normal guy who wants people to at least sit through an entire football game.I just saw “Saw 5,” and even though it was dreadful from the start like Saturday’s game, no one left until the end.If that junk can keep an audience, the defending national champs shouldn’t have any trouble either.—-Contact Johanathan Brooks at [email protected]
