Fall is my favorite time of the year. Whether it’s the cooler weather, LSU football or Halloween, there’s something about the season that makes it better than the others. This fall will be more memorable, though, now that I’m 19 years old and can vote for president. On the morning of Nov. 4, I’m going to wake up to cast my vote. But which candidate should I vote for? Each candidate has an impressive resume and the ability to help our country. With this in mind, I chose the old-fashioned way to help me determine my vote. I looked to see which candidate my favorite entertainers were supporting. Both John McCain and Barack Obama have a pretty impressive following.Supporters of McCain include Robert Duvall, Jon Voight, Sylvester Stallone and even Norm MacDonald. This is the first thing MacDonald’s probably done since “Billy Madison.”Obama has received endorsements from Bob Dylan, Pearl Jam, Samuel L. Jackson and my personal favorite, Seal. Yes, the guy who sang the song about a rose in the horrible Batman movie. But why do celebrities go out of their way to make it known whom they plan to vote for? Is it because they support the candidate and want to see him win? Maybe it’s because by endorsing a candidate, they will regain or sustain their celebrity status.Either way, it doesn’t matter. We are all guilty of caring a little too much about what our favorite entertainers think.Celebrities are worshipped more than gods in this country. People are always interested to in what celebrities say, who came out of the closet or the details of someone’s latest antics. It’s pretty sad. I can’t even remember a time when stars were liked and worshipped because of their work. People are too concerned with the personal lives of their idols and base their judgments strictly on that.I’m not saying you can’t support a candidate just because your favorite movie star does, just support them for the right reasons. I mean if Clint Eastwood jumped off a bridge in support of John McCain, would you?If you want to buy the new Young Jeezy album appropriately titled “The Recession” and listen to songs like “My President,” then go ahead. You can even agree with Jeezy and proudly support Obama. But do it because you want to, not because an artist does.I’m hoping people are more inclined to use their own personal judgment to guide them in this election season.I’m going to feel good knowing whom I vote for in this election is based on my own opinion, not a celebrity’s.And even if I mess up this time and the candidate I voted for doesn’t do a good job, I have a backup plan. I’ll wait for one of John McCain’s loyal supporters, spokesman Wilford Brimley, to step up and run in 2012.We know the health care in this country would be taken care of thanks to Brimley showing us how to beat “di-a-beet-us.”
Don’t base vote on celebrities’ choice
