Working for nearly two years by researching, finding photos and talking to business owners, Clarke Cadzow, owner of Highland Coffees, has successfully documented the history of Northgate.Second to downtown as Baton Rouge’s oldest commercial development, Northgate has housed hundreds of businesses since 1925 and has been a prime destination for University students’ entertainment and shopping. Many Louisiana businesses, like Baum’s Fine Pastries, Raising Cane’s Chicken Fingers, The Backpacker, The Co-op Bookstore and Kadair’s Audio and Video started at Northgate.Businesses like The Chimes restaurant, Inga’s Subs and Salads, The Bicycle Shop and Fed Ex Kinkos have been at Northgate for nearly 25 years.Northgate’s oldest remaining establishments are Louie’s Cafe, a 24-hour diner, which opened on Chimes Street in 1941 and The Varsity Theatre, which opened on Highland in 1937.Cadzow plans to submit his pictures and data to Hill Memorial Library.—-Contact Kyle Bove at [email protected]
