The Student Government Senate unanimously approved a bill Wednesday evening to fund “Take Back the Night,” an event hosted by the University’s Women’s Center to raise awareness of women’s issues and gender equality. The Senate will allocate $1,250 to fund the purchase of 300 T-shirts for participants to wear. Sen. Kyle Chandler, University College Center for Freshman Year, questioned whether funding T-shirts for an event was the best use of student fees. “It’s a great cause,” Chandler said. “But spending money for an event that not everyone will go to, or if they do go they might not get a T-shirt, is a misappropriation of funding.”Sen. Kelli Eason, Mass Communication, said the T-shirts would represent a sense of camaraderie among the participants. “I’ve talked to people who have experienced this sort of trauma, and they feel alone and they feel like no one understands,” Easton said. “T-shirts may seem simple to us, but to them, it represents other people who feel like them.”Catherine Hopkins, director of the Women’s Center, said she felt so strongly about having the T-shirts that she would pay for them out of her pocket if SG voted against funding the event. “The design of the T-shirt will have statistics and quotes about domestic violence,” Hopkins said. “And the T-shirts will create a buzz around campus about the event, and people might go next year.”After debating for more than 30 minutes, all of the senators voted to pass the bill.Stephen Martinez, SG webmaster, announced his resignation at the meeting. “It’s been a great 18 months,” Martinez said. “But it’s time to move forward. I would like to enjoy the rest of my senior year duty-free.”The Senate also approved SG President Colorado Robertson’s appointment of Kristin Davis, psychology junior, to the election board.—-Contact Katie Kennedy at [email protected]
