More than 60 Army soldiers from the 3rd Battalion 156th Infantry arrived from Opelousas and unloaded cots, MREs, personal gear and other supplies in front of the PMAC on North Stadium Drive late Sunday night.Capt. John Waller said the unit found out it would be moving to Baton Rouge around 4 p.m. Sunday after assisting contraflow efforts with the Louisiana State Police in Lafayette. He said they faced very little traffic on the way to the University.Sgt. Kirk DeVille said he could not disclose what kind of duties the unit would be performing. He said there was no set timeline for their stay at the University.”We’ll be here, but if needed in New Orleans, we’re capable of packing up and going to New Orleans,” he said.DeVille said residents should take heed to what the authorities are saying.”If they’re telling you to move out, please move out,” he said. “It’s better to be safe than sorry.”The unit was serving in Iraq three years ago when Hurricane Katrina battered the Gulf Coast.”I feel like the state is being a lot more proactive this time and trying to make sure we have everything in place to take care of anybody that needs help,” Waller said.—-Contact Angelle Barbazon at [email protected]
