Domino’s Pizza in Tigerland is booming. This comes after the store decided to stay open Sunday night, just one day before Hurricane Gustav made landfall on the Gulf Coast.Christine Bueche, general manager for the Tigerland location, said the store had a major increase in sales.”If I had to round it up, I would say we had a 20 to 25 percent increase,” Bueche said.Bueche said the store decided to stay open because the weather permitted and would do so today if necessary.”The weather allowed us to stay open and the team members wanted to work,” she said. “Customers needed pizzas, so we were here ready to go. If the weather isn’t that bad and we feel safe, we’ll be open [Monday]. It also depends on whether or not we have power.”Bueche said even with the increase in sales and numerous employees choosing to evacuate, the store can handle the orders — just not in the 30-minute time limit Domino’s usually advertises.”If handling it means getting pizzas to people in 30 minutes, then we don’t have enough people,” Bueche said. “But if people are patient and can wait a little longer, we will be able to handle all orders. We’ve been doing a good job keeping up so far, and people seem to understand. We’ve only had one customer complaint.”Domino’s driver Jacob Devine said he made a large number of pizza runs Sunday night.A pizza run usually consists of two pizza orders at a time, but Devine said he was allowed to take four or five orders at a time Sunday night.”I only worked a couple of hours and made about 15 runs in those two hours,” he said. “We were pretty busy [Sunday night] because people were like, “Holy cow, ya’ll are open.'”Bueche ensured students and Baton Rouge residents the location will be open “until the power goes out or it is not safe to drive.”—-Contact Jay St. Pierre at [email protected]
