John Edwards, former Democratic presidential candidate and N.C. State alumnus, admitted Friday that he had lied about having an extramarital affair.
“In 2006, I made a serious error in judgment and conducted myself in a way that was disloyal to my family and to my core beliefs,” he said in a statement.
Edwards had an affair with Rielle Hunter, 44, but said he was not the father of her baby.
Hunter produced documentaries for Edwards’ campaign Web site.
Edwards’ statement said he told his wife, Elizabeth, and their family the truth about the affair in 2006, but waited until now to now to speak to the public.
Elizabeth’s struggle with incurable cancer gained national attention and the couple discussed it before his campaign to run for president.
“In the course of several campaigns, I started to believe that I was special and became increasingly egocentric and narcissistic,” he said in the statement.
Edwards denied his relationship in October 2007, and repeated his denial two weeks ago.
He first admitted to having the affair in an interview with ABC News, and said in the statement he will have “nothing more to say” on the subject.
