Brian Reid, the driver of the car that struck and killed former N.C. State lab assistant Nancy Leidy, was sentenced Thursday to three years probation by a Superior Court Judge in Wake County. Reid plead guilty to felony death by a vehicle and driving while impaired.
In April, Reid struck and killed the 60-year-old Leidy the morning after celebrating his 21st birthday while driving his F-150 pickup with a Blood Alcohol Content of somewhere between .09 and .13, according to police. After attending class, Reid struck Leidy as she was riding her bike on Nazareth Street near campus. Police estimated Reid was driving 33 in a 25 m.p.h. zone when he struck Leidy from behind, thrusting her off the front of her bike.
A judge sentenced Reid to probation on Thursday, 400 hours of community service and five weekends in jail. As part of the community service, Reid will make 100 speaking appearances at high schools to speak about drunk driving, according to the News and Observer’s “Student gets probation in cyclist’s death” Thursday.
In court, the husband of Leidy, Ross, asked the judge not to send Reid to jail, according to the News and Observer . Ross Leidy is a former toxicology professor at NCSU.
