Michigan State baseball coach David Grewe will be named LSU’s pitching coach at a noon press conference today, LSU coach Paul Mainieri told The Daily Reveille late Wednesday.
Mainieri said Grewe, Mainieri’s lead assistant at Notre Dame from 2005-06, will resign from his position at Michigan State today.
Javi Sanchez, who served as LSU’s volunteer assistant this past season, will be promoted to hitting coach and recruiting coordinator, according to Mainieri.
Mainieri also said Will Davis, a four-year letterman at LSU from 2004-07, will be promoted from coordinator of baseball operations to volunteer assistant.
Grewe will replace former Tigers pitching coach and recruiting coordinator Terry Rooney.
Rooney accepted Central Florida’s head coaching position June 12.
Sanchez will replace former LSU hitting coach Cliff Godwin, who announced he accepted a job as Rooney’s hitting coach and recruiting coordinator at Central Florida on June 24.
During Grewe’s three seasons at Michigan State, the Spartans compiled a 75-85 record.
The former Dayton catcher spent time as an assistant at Chicago and Central Michigan before joining Mainieri’s Notre Dame staff in 2003 and eventually accepting the Michigan State job in 2006.
The Mainieri-Grewe tandem led the Fighting Irish to a 134-54-1 record and three consecutive NCAA regional appearances from 2003-05.
After being named the head coach at Michigan State in 2006, Grewe said hearing former LSU coach and current athletic director Skip Bertman speak years earlier helped him realize how much he wanted to coach, according to a July 2006 ESPN.com article.
Sanchez played for Mainieri at Notre Dame from 2001-04 – including two years with Grewe on staff – before he began a minor league career with the Minnesota Twins from 2004-07.
Davis, a former LSU catcher, will become the Tigers’ volunteer assistant after just one season as coordinator of baseball operations.
The Baton Rouge native’s father, Randy Davis, served as an LSU graduate assistant under Bertman from 1988-90, assistant coach at South Carolina and head coach at Louisiana Tech.
The Tigers reached two College World Series in Randy Davis’ three seasons as graduate assistant under Bertman.
The changes to the coaching staff come after the Tigers’ first College World Series trip in four years.
