Think back to elementary school. The teacher would promise the class a reward for good behavior — like extra recess time or a pizza party. But it always seemed like one kid ruined it for everybody. That type of blanket punishment is exactly what could happen next football season for students. The Daily Reveille reported Thursday that an average of 3,673 student season ticket holders didn’t show up per home football game this season. In 2007, that figure was 2,238. Because of the no-shows, LSU Athletic Director Joe Alleva said he is looking at reducing the number of available season tickets for students.”It’s my responsibility to have a full stadium and get as many people in there to support the kids,” Alleva said. His logic sounds right, but there are a few missing pieces. This is a university. The game is played by students, and their biggest supporters are students. LSU’s football program isn’t a professional franchise. Just like any other fan, students have a right to attend a game if they pay for tickets. It’s easy to argue that students are the most loyal fans. Remember the game against Troy? The student section had the largest concentration of fans remaining in the stadium in the fourth quarter of that historic comeback.Simply put — students are the ones who make college football venues some of the greatest and most entertaining spectacles in all of athletics. Students get to games early, stay late and keep the entire crowd energized and even sometimes entertained.Everytime there is an overtime game in Tiger Stadium, the Tigers opt for the opposing team to score in the north end zone — home to one of the rowdiest groups of students on the planet. If you start pushing them out, that special tradition begins to fade. And the student section isn’t the only place where fans aren’t showing up. The upper decks are clearly never filled to capacity for games. There’s no easy answer to this question. We aren’t sure of a good one either. But targeting students isn’t a good first step.—-Contact the Editorial Board at [email protected]
