Blake Roy, 21, general studies junior, died early Sunday morning in a car accident on Highway 107 in Cocoville.
Roy, who had returned to his parents’ home in Mansura for the weekend, was thrown from his car at 4:30 a.m. after having overcompensated and veering off the road, the car hit a ditch and flipped, according to a state trooper’s fatality report.
The report indicated the accident was alcohol-related, but the results from alcohol tests are still pending to determine if Roy had consumed alcohol. The report also said he was not wearing a seat belt at the time.
Dottie Roy said her son was outgoing and a “magnet” – attracting all of his friends to their home when he would return for a weekend.
She said he was a leader for his friends and the one who made plans.
Jarrod Roy, who has been friends with Blake Roy his whole life, said Blake Roy would go home about twice a month, and the two had several friends who still lived in Mansura.
“As soon as Blake would make it in, everyone was here to see him and be around him,” Jarrod Roy said.
Beau Layfield, law student and close friend of Blake Roy, said he will remember the time the two spent together hunting and fishing.
“One thing I would want people to know about is he was a loyal friend and a brave individual,” Layfield said.
Layfield said Blake Roy enjoyed his job at the state capitol and was enthusiastic about the political atmosphere he worked in.
Layfield said Blake Roy was not the type of person to drive under the influence of alcohol. He said many people have a few drinks and then drive but speculated his friend would not have driven had he been impaired.
Bryan Roy, Blake Roy’s brother, said it was common for Blake Roy and his friend Justin Parsley to go out for a couple of drinks but could not speculate if they had been drinking the night of the accident.
Parsley was in the car at the time of the accident and suffered injuries to his head and jaw, Bryan Roy told The Daily Reveille.
