Tulane made LSU pay in a big way for two errors Tuesday night in front of 10,011 fans at Zephyr Field in New Orleans.
The Green Wave scored five runs after an error in the second inning and scored four more runs after another LSU miscue in the fifth inning en route to a 12-5 victory and a regular-season series split with the Tigers.
With Tulane (24-15) holding a 6-2 advantage with two outs in the fifth inning, junior Steven Waguespack misplayed freshman Seth Henry’s fly ball to first base, which allowed junior Mark Hamilton to score on the play.
Tulane junior Tim Guidry then followed with an RBI single to center field to score senior Nathan Southard.
LSU (26-13) was not done helping out the Green Wave just yet.
With Henry and Guidry at the corners, junior reliever Jonathan Wilhite caught Guidry in a run-down but forgot about Henry, who stole home plate on the play.
After Wilhite saw Henry steal home plate, he attempted to throw out Guidry at second base but hit him in the back with the ball.
An error was not charged to Wilhite on the sequence as Tulane took a 9-2 lead.
Tulane closed the fifth inning with one more run after freshman Max Kwan got his second hit of the game on a RBI single to right field.
The first LSU error of the game came in the second inning after freshman JT Wise booted a ground ball at second base.
Eight batters and seven Tulane hits later, the Green Wave had pushed the score to 5-1 and never looked back.
The Tigers scattered 10 hits in the game including solo homeruns from Wise and senior Quinn Stewart in the fourth and sixth innings, respectively.
LSU tried to overcome its miscues in the seventh inning by scoring two runs, but Stewart hit into an inning-ending double play to end the Tigers’ charge.
Consistent pitching was also a problem for LSU in the game as seven pitchers made appearances.
Sophomore Michael Bonura started the game but lasted just one inning after yielding four earned-runs on five hits.
Junior Derik Olvey, who did not get out of the first inning this past Sunday against Alabama, made his first relief appearance of the year after replacing Bonura in the second inning.
Olvey went two innings and gave up no runs.
Freshman Darryl Shaffer, Wilhite, and seniors Chris Cahill, Chase Dardar and Will Harris followed Olvey and collectively allowed seven runs on six hits over the remaining five innings.
For the Green Wave, freshman Stephen Porlier pitched 6 and 1/3 innings and allowed five runs on nine hits and struck out seven LSU hitters.
Sophomore Trey Martin relieved Porlier and silenced the Tigers over the final three innings, allowing only one hit.
