The smell of thousands of pounds of crawfish filled the air Saturday in the Fred’s parking lot at Kappa Alpha Theta’s annual “Crawfish on the Clover” fundraiser.
Crawfish, jambalaya, corn and potatoes were served to benefit the Baton Rouge chapter of Court Appointed Special Advocates, Kappa Alpha Theta’s national philanthropy. CASA, a non-profit organization, works to place neglected children in reliable permanent housing, according to the organization’s Web site.
Julia Coutin, animal science junior and Kappa Alpha Theta vice president of external relations, said sorority members sold approximately 1,500 tickets for $8 each and served about 2,700 pounds of crawfish for the event. Each person received 3 pounds of crawfish.
Coutin said effects of Hurricane Katrina made this year’s fundraiser difficult to organize.
“The price of crawfish doubled after Hurricane Katrina,” Coutin said.
Risa Robert Mueller, recruitment coordinator for the Capital Area CASA Association, said Kappa Alpha Theta provides “tremendous help” for raising awareness and funds for CASA.
Mueller and Coutin said the sorority raised approximately $9,000 last year for the Capital Area CASA Association.
“We’re big fans of Kappa Alpha Theta,” Mueller said.
