The Carlotta Street Block Party has become a Halloween tradition for hundreds of University students. For the past several years, the block party has been held on the Friday before Halloween in cooperation with the LSU football schedule. But the festivities will be held on Saturday because the team has a bye week. “Some people said it would be on Friday this year because of Voodoo, but some people put on Facebook that it would be on Saturday,” said Jacques Metevier, economics senior and State Street resident. Metevier said he does not plan to go to the block party this year because he is going to the Voodoo Music Experience in New Orleans. Residential block parties require permits, liability insurance, written permission from the block’s residents and businesses and at least one police officer per barricade blocking off the street, according to Baton Rouge Police Department Traffic Division. BRPD said Thursday no one had submitted a permit to the Traffic Division for Saturday’s block party. Josh Melder, political science senior, said he would be disappointed if BRPD canceled the block party. “I would be very disappointed because it has become an institution of the LSU community,” he said. “I would be more disappointed with the people who didn’t get the permits though.” The block party is infamous for colorful and creative costumes. “My friend is going as Jesus Christ, so I’m going as Satan,” said Melder. “I like seeing all the costumes and the creativity of the other people who come to the party.”
