We’re smack-dab in the middle of Dead Week, and while by now most of you have probably chosen a place to dwindle away your days left until exams, we at Technician would like to suggest a few of our favorite places to get away and get some work done.
D.H. Hill East Wing
The new East Wing of D.H Hill is something else.
The retro color scheme of the first room in the wing, combined with computers and scattered chairs and sofas creates a relaxed, laid-back setting for studying.
Toward the back of the wing, though, the congressional feel of the paneled walls and organized rows of tables and chairs makes for motivated study sessions.
Hill of Beans, right down the stairs, is just the thing for that caffeine fix without having to so much as leave the building. And with a Wii and Guitar Hero in the new wing, the library is also the perfect place to take a break from all those Dead Week duties.
However, if perfect peace is what you’re looking for, you may want to head to the bookstacks — because while it isn’t necessarily loud, the new wing still has its share of conversational chatter.
The Court of North Carolina
A long-time favorite for CHASS kids, the court is a huge, rolling green space that spans the length of Caldwell, Winston and Tompkins halls and reaches down to Leazar Hall, a design school building.
Lined by trees on one end and a brick wall on the other, it’s the perfect place to snag a spot to lay while reading, whether you’re in the sun or the shade. It’s also a great place to unwind with a Frisbee or soccer ball.
And because it is so close to so many classes, the court is ideal for shoving in a few extra minutes of cram time before finals.
Engineering Building I study lounge
The EBI building on Centennial Campus has a wonderful, multi-floor study lounge with an open floor plan perfect for the social studier.
Because it is a sort of thruway for upstairs classes, people often move through it on their way to class, and there’s a chance you’ll bump into someone you know. And really, who doesn’t like a good distraction?
There are couches, as well as tables and chairs to choose from, and the professional atmosphere has a wood and marble kind of feel to it. Wireless Internet makes it easy to move around as you please, and because it is on Centennial, it is perfect for those engineering and textiles majors who need a calm place close to classes.
Courtyard next to the Fox Science Teaching Laboratory
A place that many people pass, but not many people think about, the courtyard next the Marye Anne Fox lab is a great place for end-of-the-semester cramming.
With a large expanse of luscious green grass — one of the few green spaces on a campus abounding with bricks — and no trees to cast shadows, there’s always a spot to be found in the sunshine.
While things could get a little sweaty, depending on the weather any given day, if you’re looking to get a tan while you study for finals, this is the place to be.
