The LSU System Board of Supervisors voted Friday to implement the freshman residency requirement, beginning in 2009.
The only dissenting vote came from Student Government President Cassie Alsfeld, who dissented based on her concerns about dormitory safety and students’ quality of life.
“I understand the academic merits, but there are a lot of kinks in the system,” Alsfeld said. “The residence halls need better lighting and parking, and I would like to see the buses run there so that we can have it all balanced.”
Board member Laura Leach echoed Alsfeld’s concerns, and requested that the requirement be approved only on the condition that efforts will be made by the University to improve overall dormitory safety, such as increased lighting by the residential halls. Chancellor Sean O’Keefe accepted her conditions.
