Concerns about the fate of the African American Cultural Center and the Women’s Center were brought before the Student Senate on Wednesday night.
Moshe Cohen, mathematics graduate student, and Whitney Breaux, Students’ Rights and Welfare Committee chairwoman, asked the Senate to raise awareness about the undecided future of the AACC and the Women’s Center. The University plans to erect a structure housing both a parking garage and a bookstore on or near the two buildings.
“I urge everyone to push the University as a whole to acknowledge this situation and go public with it before we hit the point of no return,” Cohen said.
Breaux, University College Center for Freshman Year senator, also mentioned two upcoming SG events. She said Constitution Day, scheduled for Sept. 17, aims to educate students about Constitutional issues and urge the University to adopt a student bill of rights. She also discussed tentative plans for a student health day on Oct. 10.
During the executive officer reports, SG Director of Athletics Dixon McMakin reiterated that students will need their new University identification cards to attend Saturday’s football game.
SG Director of External Affairs Calder Lynch mentioned a new initiative to raise student awareness and involvement with the upcoming state elections. SG will sponsor voter registration drives and prepare packets identifying the candidates’ stances and detailing major election issues.
In addition to hearing reports, the Senate passed two bills, including one to distribute SG money remaining from the previous year. The Senate also adopted a legislative order assigning committee membership.
The meeting included resignations by Sen. James Pfeiffer and Sen. Max Zoghbi, both representing UCFY. Zoghbi, who resigned by e-mail, cited personal reasons for his departure, while Pfeiffer expressed disappointment with certain unproductive committee operations.
“I can’t feel responsible for what this body does any more,” Pfeiffer said.
