The sun shined on long lines of sweating students and non-students alike Friday afternoon on Lee Field. The people queued up not only for entry to the event, but once inside, they joined long lines for snow cones, funnel cakes, ribbon fries and ice cream, as well as inedible prizes.
“It gives us something to do, [to] stay out of trouble,” Rick Richardson, freshman in environmental engineering, said.
Danielle Groover, freshman computer engineering, said it was pretty “awesome” because “college people love free stuff.”
Students weren’t only waiting for the free prizes, though. They were also handing them out.
Valerie McDonald, a junior in arts applications, was working a prize wheel.
“It’s very hectic but exciting to see everyone out and excited about Cartel,” she said.
And for some students, Cartel and the other bands were definitely the drawing factor.
Chris Jones, a junior in history education, said he saw Cartel at Warped Tour before it became big, and that he enjoys Cartel because the music is not too hard or mellow, but just right.
Others were there because their roommates got them hooked.
“My roommate plays their music all day,” Angie Rizzo, freshman in animal science, said.
Chris Sanchez and Renee Baker contributed to this report.
